Churandy Martina is our best known international athlete. As an athlete he got our country on the world map by proving that he is one of the fastest sprinters in the world, when he won the gold medal in the 100 m during the Pan American Games in 2007 (Rio de Janeiro). He also ranked 5th in the 100 m and 200 m world championships (Osaka 2007, Japan). In the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 he ranked 4th in 100 m and 2nd in 200 m but was later disqualified, and lost his silver medal.
Churandy was born July 3, 1984 on Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. He won his first medal running when he was only 6 years old in a youth run. He came in 3rd. Churandy always enjoyed sports. He participated in athletics for his school and managed to do very well. It was Churandy’s dream to reach the top. He always admired athletes like Michael Johnson but considers himself his own role model.
